Barley Hall Training App

Gamified Learning Accessibility (A11y) User Research

Context & User Research

Context: University UX Design Module

Barley Hall required a cross-platform training resource to help volunteers become room guides. The objective was to create an accessible, engaging app that supports both bite-sized learning and comprehensive revision.

I utilized Affinity Mapping to compile survey responses, which revealed that users prioritize info-dense resources balanced with gamified quizzes to reinforce learning.

UX Research & UI Design

  • Persona-Informed Layout: Based on survey data showing that volunteers require flexibility, I created a persona. Through user journey mapping, I identified pain points such as difficulty tracking viewed information or navigating complex menus.
  • Gamified Engagement: Inspired by apps like Duolingo, I implemented instant feedback and multiple-choice quizzes to keep volunteers motivated.
  • Interactive Exploration: I designed an immersive feature where users can click on room furnishings to reveal information.

Accessibility & Reflection

  • Inclusive Design: To accommodate diverse needs, I implemented accessibility features including contrast-changing options, text-to-speech, and adjustable text sizes.
  • Defensive Design: Guided by user journey mapping, I added progress indicators, error prevention dialogs, and a bookmarking tool to prevent users from losing their progress.
